Incorporate Future Growth Now
Most of the server industry has standardized around the 42u Cabinet. That is helpful information as you plan for your current server needs. However, you can save money on future expansions by planning ahead for tomorrow. Part of your IT strategic plan should include company growth, both in terms of business growth and the growth of human capital. The savings comes in the form of preparing now for later development. TIPS:
- The cost of buying open frame racks that are taller than you currently need will cost less than buying a second rack later.
- You are saving money by buying more than you need now both in terms of future prices and labor.
- It costs a lot less to install a taller cabinet today than it will to install an additional cabinet.
Measure, Measure, Measure
While most of the industry has standardized to using the 42u Cabinet, not all servers are standardized. Measure your current equipment. To insure that you are buying open frame racks that fit your needs double check your measurements. You waste time, labor, and money buying equipment that you cannot use. TIPS: Waste comes in many forms and it all costs money.
- Time is wasted returning items.
- There are restocking fees and shipping fees that you end up paying.
- There is the labor of unpacking and attempting to install and then uninstalling a server rack that does not fit or will not hold your machine.
All of that waste can be eliminated by measuring the space and your machines.
Quality over Quantity
It is always good to be frugal but never wise to be cheap. If you are incorporating future growth then consider the quality of what you are purchasing as well. If what you buy today needs to be replaced tomorrow, you have wasted money. Ask yourself the following questions:
- Is the construction of these open faced racks solid?
- Will this model of server cabinet stand up to usage?
- Is this cabinet or rack made from quality materials such as steel frames?
- Are the features of this rack or cabinet compliant with EIA standards?
