Rack mount depth is commonly confused with the overall rack depth including the door. However, the mounting depth is actually the dimension from the front mounting post to the back mounting post.
Rack Mounting Depth
The mounting depth refers to the area in which your rack allows you to install rails or shelves. Since most racks have adjustable mounting posts, the depth can only be accurately determined by measuring it. This will ensure that your equipment, such as rails or shelves, will fit inside the rack.
Common Rack Mounting Depths
The rack mounting depth has been increasing over the years, along with the overall depth of racks. This is caused by the steady increase of the depths of standard servers made by Dell, HP, and IBM. The following OEM standards are:
- Dell standard depth: 28 7/8″
- HP standard depth: 29 1/8″
- IBM standard depth: 28 1/2″
The depth was commonly 19″ to 24″, which is still used for Audio Racks. The most common depth is now approximately 29″, since this is close to all OEM standards. Any depth greater than 29” will provide extra support for cable management and additional accessories.

Measuring 2 Post Rack Mount Depth (Upright Depth)
2 Post relay rack’s mounting depth is also called the Upright Depth. Relay racks only have two uprights to support the equipment instead of the four uprights that other rackmount cabinets have. The most common upright depth is 3″, although 5″ and 6″ are also readily available.
Relay racks are most commonly used in data closets and back offices where only one or two racks are needed. Servers can be installed in a center mount or flush mount by using rackmount installation kits or conversion kits.
