The emergence of artificial intelligence (AI) is significantly impacting the data center industry. Due to AI’s high computational needs, it developed a growing demand for increased computing power. This led to businesses making major investments in AI data centers to enhance and optimize their operational environments.
Additionally, AI plays a critical role in optimizing energy efficiency, reducing waste, enhancing sustainability, and more. By utilizing all of these capabilities, AI data centers can positively impact the efficiency, reliability, and performance for business operations. One of the major AI data center projects currently underway is The Stargate Project, with its first location based in Texas.
What is the Stargate Project?
The Stargate Project is a joint venture plan that intends to invest $500 billion over the next four years to develop new AI infrastructures for OpenAI across the United States. The initial equity funders in Stargate are SoftBank, OpenAI, Oracle, and MGX. The lead partners for this project are SoftBank and OpenAI, with Softbank taking over financial responsibility while OpenAI has operational responsibility.
Furthermore, the key initial technology partners are Arm, Microsoft, NVIDIA, Oracle, and OpenAI. As the key initial technology partners finalize agreements, they will begin assessing potential data center locations nationwide.
Ultimately, the overall goal is to build and develop AI for the future of business operations. With The Stargate Project, these data centers will be exclusively used by OpenAI as it expands its generative AI compute portfolio.
The Largest AI Infrastructure Project Starting in Texas
This project has been planned since 2022, and was formally announced by President Donald Trump on January 21, 2025. Joining him at the conference were Larry Ellison, Executive Chairman of Oracle; Masayoshi Son, CEO of SoftBank; and Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI.
Larry Ellison revealed that the first site location will be in Abilene, TX. Ellison stated that “the data centers are already under construction here in Texas. Each building is half a million square feet. There are 10 buildings currently being built, but that will expand to 20 other locations beyond the Abilene location, which is our first location.”
He also added that Oracle will be focused on the healthcare industry, where they aim to assist physicians and patients in gaining a clearer understanding of medical issues. Oracle will also help develop customized healthcare strategies through the use of AI in digital health records. Overall, the use of AI in healthcare will help to improve patient care, diagnosis, and treatment.
To top it off, Masayoshi Son shared that they (Softbank) will immediately invest $100 billion. Their overall goal is to reach a $500 billion investment by 2029. Son shared that “ we are very excited to do this. Our partner is, of course, Softbank, Open AI, Oracle, and an additional investing partner with MGX. On top of that, we have the technology partner Nvidia, and of course, Microsoft has been very, very supportive and continues to support all our success.”
The Impact of AI for Data Centers
Artificial Intelligence (AI) has quickly become more mainstream for data centers, as it’s become essential for optimizing energy use, improving cooling efficiency, automating maintenance, and predicting failures before they occur. With AI, it also improves workload management, reduces operational costs, and enhances security.
With solutions such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT gaining hundreds of millions of users almost instantly, AI models no longer work in the background and are used in almost every industry. Businesses use AI functionality to streamline processes and improve results. However, AI requires high amounts of computing power and data storage to train and deliver efficient AI applications.
Even though modern and traditional data centers serve as the foundation for supporting these critical functions, they will need to adopt new technologies, such as AI systems, to support the increased demands. This allows data centers to provide enhanced efficiency, reliability, and overall performance.
AI Data Center Growth in Texas
Since Abilene was selected as the first city for the Stargate Project, this is beneficial for meeting the growing demand for digital services while also supporting economic and technological advancements. These developments ensure a resilient, connected, and sustainable future for Texas. As Texas establishes itself as a key player in data center expansion, this marks the beginning of emerging AI projects that will shape the future of data centers.
